Living only a few miles away in Ripple I ventured to the Jockey only 4 weeks ago (July 2004). The Inn has just been taken over by two enterprising men - Tony and Mark (who are both delightful hosts). On entering I was immediately struck by the soft ambience...tasteful ironwork, just the right amount of lighting AND a smoke free restaurant. The menu changes regularly and features a myriad of mouthwatering starters (I had the whole King Prawns with butter, chilli and garlic...yum) Main courses range from Tournedos steak, gigantic Steak and Kidney Pies to delicate Calves Liver, Chicken with Stilton to Ostrich and others. Fish is especially good - the Salmon, Halibut and good old battered fish and chips all feature. The puddings are varied - and reasonably priced at 3.95 - cassis sorbet, lemon tart, a rib sticking toffee pudding whilst fresh raspberries and the lightest of italian ice creams finish the meals magnificently. Prices range from around 3 to 5 pounds starters. Main courses from 9.95 to 14.00 - served with a choice of new potatoes, salad or fresh vegetables. For lunch they also include a superb variety of baguettes etc - the bacon and chees melt is to die for AND served with chips and salad for only 4.95 - a bargain.
The service is excellent - note it can get quite busy so be prepared to wait ... it's all freshly cooked so just go with the excellent wine list! All in all I can't recommend this restaurant high enough - good food, friendly staff and a warmth so often lacking in restaurants today. Oh nearly forgot - there is an excellent vegetarian option changed weekly and the loos are palatial AND scrupulously clean. What more could you ask!
